Zakir Hussain, a four-time grammy winner including three in the 66th grammy awards this year, passes away at 73. After much confusion about his passing away, his sister Khurshid Aulia said “he passed away very peacefully”.
He was admitted in the San Francisco, US hospital. He had been in hospital for the past two weeks and was shifted to the intensive care unit (ICU) after his condition deteriorated. He finally passed away due to complications arising out of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, the family said in a statement.
His death has left the whole nation in shock, resulting many actors, politicians and people from the media industry grieving his loss. Among them our honourable Prime Minister Narendra Modi, also expressed his condolences via the X handle (twitter).

In his tweet, he mentions Zakir as a revolutionary artist who will be remembered as a true genius who revolutionized the world of Indian classical music. He also extended his condolences towards his family saying: “Deeply saddened by the passing of the legendary tabla maestro, Ustad Zakir Hussain Ji. He will be remembered as a true genius who revolutionized the world of Indian classical music”.
“He also brought the tabla to the global stage, captivating millions with his unparalleled rhythm. India has truly lost a gem, an artist who started working in a very early age with several national and international artistes like some of India’s iconic performers, including Ravi Shankar, Ali Akbar Khan and Shivkumar Sharma, in his career.
