In a rapidly changing India, a significant shift is observed in how people interact with their homes, as revealed by the ‘HomeScapes’ study conducted by Godrej Interio. This research illuminates the deep connection between home decor and personal growth, with 46% of respondents visualizing their homes as social spaces to engage with colleagues, family, and friends. Comparatively, Boomers (41%), Gen Z (42%), and Millennials (43%) share this vision, but none as strongly as Gen X.
Gen X’s Work Ethic and Home Engagement
Gen X, influenced by technological advancements and economic shifts, is known for their professional dedication, often working long hours. The ‘HomeScapes’ study reveals that over two-thirds (69%) of Gen X respondents take pride in discussing their career achievements when entertaining guests. This highlights the significance of professional accomplishments in their self-image and social interactions. Additionally, Gen X is more inclined than other generations to engage with colleagues in their homes.

Our study delves into generational perspectives on a crucial aspect of life—the home as a mirror of identity. The survey data underscores that the Gen X work ethic, typified by a 70-hour work week, exemplifies the resilience and dedication necessary to thrive amidst intense competition and rapid change. At Godrej Interio, we craft furniture that transcends aesthetics, offering features tailored to enhance the modern lifestyle across generations.”
Emotional Connection to Workspaces
The research indicates that respondents perceive their study areas as more than merely functional. For instance, 62% of Gen X individuals express a deep emotional connection with their study table and chair, compared to 53% of Gen Z. This bond implies a commitment to and investment in activities carried out in that space, often associated with work and productivity. Moreover, more than half of this cohort (56%) believe their growth, aspirations, and productivity are linked to their study space. This connection signifies that they view their work environment as a crucial factor in their professional development and overall success.
Conclusion
The ‘HomeScapes’ study by Godrej Interio reveals the dedication and work ethic of Gen X, emphasizing their deep emotional connection to their homes and workspaces. As Gen X continues to navigate professional and personal landscapes, their homes remain a pivotal reflection of their identity and achievements.
