A Unique Perspective on the Gujarat Riots

Rajshri Deshpande is set to captivate audiences once again with her latest short film, Gudgudi, directed by Abhiroop Basu. The film is an evocative exploration of the Gujarat riots of 2002, told from the perspective of women. Unlike other films that focus on communal disharmony, Gudgudi delves into the brutality faced by women during the riots, offering a fresh and poignant narrative.

Highlighting Survival and Resilience

Set against the grim backdrop of the riots, Gudgudi follows a mother-daughter duo’s struggle for survival. Director Abhiroop Basu, known for his acclaimed shorts like Meal and Laali, was driven to create this film after uncovering shocking details about the atrocities committed during the riots. Basu’s research revealed that over 150 Hindu women were raped and murdered, prompting him to tell a story of women’s suffering and endurance devoid of religious biases.

A Director’s Vision

“Women don’t have any religion; they are just flesh,” Basu remarked, encapsulating the essence of his film. His approach resonated with Rajshri Deshpande, who was drawn to the project’s focus on human survival against all odds. Deshpande appreciated Basu’s decision to eliminate unnecessary distractions and concentrate on a raw, human story, making the film’s narrative both urgent and relevant.
