Introduction

Kolkata, 3rd July 2024: Utkala, the cultural wing of Sri Jagannath Seva Samiti, is set to host the vibrant Ratha Yatra and Odisha Festival from July 7th to 15th, 2024. This event promises to be a spectacular celebration of Odisha’s rich cultural heritage.

Commencement of Festivities

The festivities will begin with Netrotsav, followed by the grand Ratha Yatra on July 7th. This roadshow will start at the Khidirpur Jagannath Temple and proceed to Northern Park, Bhawanipur, where the deities will reside until July 14th. The procession will be accompanied by various Kirtan groups, adding a spiritual and musical dimension to the journey.

Inauguration of Odisha Festival

Mr. Chandra Sekhar Panigrahi, President of Sri Jagannath Seva Samiti, has announced the inauguration of the Odisha Festival on July 8th. The event will be inaugurated by Prabhu Nitai Das, Chairman of Community Development of ISKCON New Town, Kolkata. The nine-day festival will feature numerous cultural performances and an exhibition showcasing Odisha’s exquisite handicrafts.

Utkala Samman Award

This year, the prestigious Utkala Samman will be awarded to Padmashri Pandit Antaryami Mishra, a renowned columnist, astrologer, and researcher. Mishra has made significant contributions to the Odia language, Jagannath culture, and has authored 37 books, some of which are part of academic curricula.

Enthusiastic Participation

Mr. Ashim Kumar Bose, Hon’ble Councillor, Ward No. 70, KMC, Bhawanipore, expressed his delight at hosting the Odisha Festival for the second time in the locality. He encouraged everyone to seek blessings from Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra during their nine-day stay at Northern Park.

Cultural Programs and Performances

Sri Guru Prasad Pattnaik, President of Utkala, highlighted the diverse cultural programs planned for the festival. Key events include:

  • Dance Theatre “The DRAUPADI Phenomenon” by Vidushi Sanchita Bhattacharya
  • Gotipua Dance supported by the Cultural Department of the Government of Odisha and EZCC, Government of India
  • ARPANAM Performance by Lahori Group of Bengal
  • Drawing Competition for school children
  • Cultural Programs by Soul to Soul Troupe, Sri Srijan Chatterjee & Troupe
  • Mahiri, Sambalpuri & Mayuri Dance by Natraj Dance Academy
  • Odishi Dance by Mrs. Sharmistha Pal and Mrs. Arunima Acharya
  • Bhajan Performances by Sri Sricharan Mohanty and Troupe

Bhajan Sandhya by Anup Jalota

A major highlight of the festival will be the Bhajan Sandhya on July 12th, featuring Anup Jalota, renowned as the Bhajan Samrat. His soulful renditions of devotional music are expected to be a major draw.

Traditional Competitions

The festival will also feature the traditional Khiri-Pitha competition among ladies on July 14th, a culturally significant event in the region.

Conclusion of the Festival

Devotees and visitors can avail Prasad by collecting coupons from the Prasad counter throughout the festival. The nine-day-long Rath Yatra festival will conclude with the Suna Besa of the deities at the Kidderpore Temple, marking the end of this grand cultural celebration.
