Rural bengal women are chronically suffering from low haemoglobin. They suffer silently as they are unable to realise their weakness or tiredness is due to low haemoglobin .
Rotary club of salt lake metropolitan of Rotary international district 3291 realised this problem and took up a project to screen , educate and treat these women . So far 1500 women have been screened by Rotarian doctors from club aided by different organisation and results are eye opener. Around 68.5% women were found yo be anaemic , mostly attributed to nutritional cause .
Last two camps at Gadkhali village on 7 th May 23 in Sundarbans and Mundapara on 14 th may 23 behind Ruby hospital had around 200 patients and more than 75% were found to be anaemic .
Each woman was educated about the the disease Anaemia, cause of anaemia and how they can prevent it by consuming locally available food . They were also trained about Menstrual hygiene and importance of hand washing & sanitation to prevent water borne diseases & worm infestation.
Camps were done by Rotary clubs of Aabahamaan & salt lake metropolitan in association with Young Indians kolkata , Kolkata menopause society and Temple of knowledge of Art of living . Dr Aruna Tantia , Dr Nirmala Pipara , Dr Saktirupa Chakroborty , Dr Suranjan charkraborty , Dr Shabana Roze choudhary ,Dr Nupur and Dr Saha gave their valuable time to serve these women .
Each of 200 women was given free iron medicine for 3-4 months and deworming besides screening for lifestyle diseases like Diabetes & Hypertension .
Re screening will be done after 6 months to measure results . For non nutritional cause they will be offered free surgery .
