Kolkata, 1st July 2024: The West Bengal garment industry celebrates a significant milestone with the 56th Garment Fair and B2B Expo. Held over three days at Biswa Bangla (Milan Mela), Kolkata, this event is organized by the West Bengal Garment Manufacturers and Dealers Association (WBGMDA), which has been serving the industry for 58 years. The event is expected to generate significant business, with 900 national and international brands participating and an estimated Rs. 850-900 crore in commercial transactions anticipated.

Inauguration by Prominent Figures

The event’s importance to the state’s economy was highlighted by the attendance of state government officials and leading businessmen. Smt. Chandrima Bhattacharya, Hon’ble Minister of Finance (Independent Charge), and Sri. Sujit Bose, Minister of State for Fire, inaugurated the expo. Other notable attendees included Sri. Pradeep Kumar Nandy, Sri. Nirmal Jain, Sri. Biram Prakash Sultania, and many more.

Boosting the Apparel Sector

Since its inception, WBGMDA has conducted B2B exhibitions and garment fairs to foster the growth of a modern, competitive apparel sector, primarily composed of MSMEs. The Buyer Sellers Meet has become a crucial gathering for prominent businesses in the eastern region. The event significantly contributes to the GDP by generating numerous jobs.

Sri. Devendra Baid, Hony. Secretary of WBGMDA, stated, “Our buyers and sellers meetings have achieved continuous success throughout five decades of business in the eastern part of the country. This event has continued to expand and support the readymade garment sector despite economic fluctuations.”

Sri. Hari Kishan Rathi, President of WBGMDA, added, “We have received continuous support from our predecessors and aim to create a sustainable environment for the next generation. Alongside our usual Manufacturers and Wholesalers, we also have Retailers participating this time.”

Founded in 1962, the West Bengal Garment Manufacturers and Traders Association represents the ready-made garment industry in East India. The association is affiliated with the Bharat Chamber of Commerce and run democratically by a core committee and members dedicated to the organization’s improvement. They arrange twice-yearly Garment Buyers and Sellers Meets, seminars, health examinations, and cultural events.
