The Autism Convention 2024, held on November 22nd and 23rd at the Ramakrishna Mission in Gol Park, Kolkata, marked a historic milestone. With over 700 attendees, it became India’s largest gathering of parents of individuals with autism. Participants came not only from across West Bengal but also from states such as Uttarakhand, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Delhi, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, Assam, Andhra Pradesh, and Bihar, alongside international delegates from Bangladesh and Nepal.

The two-day event focused on the present and future challenges of individuals with autism. It featured a diverse lineup of sessions addressing crucial issues such as financial planning, residential care options, legal protections, and strategies to counter abuse and discrimination. Special attention was given to the mental health of parents, fostering better communication, addressing sexuality, and tackling the isolation faced by both individuals and families.
Practical workshops and personalized consultations were conducted, all of which were fully booked, reflecting the high demand for actionable support. The Convention also emphasized the importance of moving away from chasing so-called “cures” and instead focusing on equipping families to build sustainable futures for their loved ones.
A Collaborative Effort
The Convention was spearheaded by five dedicated parents: Sumitra Paul Bakshi (mother of Baiduriyya), Dr. Amrita Panda (mother of Disha), Nilanjana Rambothu (mother of Venkatesh), Chaitali Gami (mother of Shreya), and Dr. Rudrajit Sinha (father of Adhiraj). Their vision was brought to life through the contributions of experts like Dr. Pankaj Maru, Prof. Shekhar Sheshadri from NIMHANS, legal advocate UK Shukla, psychiatrist Dr. Jai R Ram, and notable personalities such as sports producer Joy Bhattacharya.
Other eminent speakers included Dr. Jashodhara Choudhuri, pediatric neurologist; Neena Wagh of ALAP; Tulika Das, Chairperson of the West Bengal Commission for Protection of Child Rights; and Lina Bardhan of Noble Mission, among many others. Their collective expertise provided valuable insights on a wide array of topics.

Building a Sense of Community
One of the most inspiring aspects of the Convention was the active involvement of parents in every facet of the event, from catering to venue decoration. This hands-on participation fostered a deep sense of unity and ownership.
A highlight of the event was the launch of two groundbreaking initiatives:
- The Autism Outdoors Card – Designed to encourage families to engage with society, this card offers incentives at restaurants, salons, and resorts, promoting inclusion and acceptance.
- The Autism Family Card – Introduced by Apollo Clinic, it provides discounts on diagnostic tests, supporting the healthcare needs of individuals with autism and their families.
Additionally, the Convention hosted vibrant stalls showcasing handmade crafts by individuals with autism, adding color and character to the event while highlighting their talents.

Social Campaigns for Lasting Impact
Three major campaigns underscored the Convention’s focus on sustainable change:
- Directory of Professionals – A first-of-its-kind resource listing experts who work with individuals on the autism spectrum, published in the event’s yearbook.
- Autism Outdoors – Encouraging families to venture out and integrate into society.
- Fathers for Autism – A movement to involve fathers in building inclusive communities by collaborating with local stakeholders.
A Message of Hope
The Convention concluded with a renewed sense of optimism. Speakers and delegates praised the flawless organization and the welcoming atmosphere of the venue. The event underscored the importance of creating a strong, interconnected community of parents and allies.
The Autism Convention 2024 not only celebrated the resilience of families but also laid a foundation for a more inclusive and supportive society. It truly demonstrated that “it takes a village to raise a child.”
