The Howrah Division of Eastern Railway has implemented several initiatives to maintain uninterrupted services during this year’s monsoon season. Given the region’s tropical climate, heavy rainfall and cyclonic weather are common, making low-lying areas particularly vulnerable to waterlogging. To address these challenges, the Howrah Division has taken proactive measures to ensure uninterrupted service.
Strategic Resource Allocation
To combat the potential disruptions caused by heavy rains, the division has strategically positioned resources:
- 30 wagons loaded with boulders are ready at Bandel.
- 54 wagons of sand dust have been distributed across various stations as a monsoon reserve.
- 22 vulnerable locations have been identified, with round-the-clock monitoring by deployed personnel.
Infrastructure Maintenance and Improvements
Ensuring the infrastructure can withstand monsoon challenges is crucial:
- 37 Limited Height Subways (LHS) drains have been cleared.
- Pumping arrangements are in place at 37 waterlogging-prone subways.
- 703 platform sheds have been inspected and repaired as needed.
- Drains adjacent to stations and railway tracks at various locations have been cleared.
- 132 trees beside railway tracks have been trimmed to prevent uprooting during heavy rains.
Enhanced Monitoring and Inspection
To maintain service continuity and safety, the Howrah Division has initiated:
- Monsoon patrolling at various locations, including 36 vulnerable spots.
- Regular night footplate inspections by officers throughout the division.
Commitment to Passenger Safety
These comprehensive measures underscore the Howrah Division’s dedication to passenger safety and service reliability. By proactively addressing potential monsoon-related disruptions, the division aims to enhance the resilience of railway services in the region. The steps taken reflect a strong commitment to mitigating the impact of severe weather conditions, ensuring that passengers experience minimal inconvenience during the monsoon season.
