Kolkata, July 13, 2024: The New Town Sarbojanin Durgotsab Samiti organized the ‘Khunti Puja’ to mark the beginning of their Durga Puja preparations. This ritual, steeped in tradition and community spirit, has been a cornerstone of the committee’s celebrations for the past two years. The event took place on 13th July, Saturday from 12:00 PM onwards at City Square, Newtown, opposite Central Mall.

Stepping into the Third Edition

As New Town Sarbojanin Durgotsab Samiti steps into its third year, the theme for this year’s Durga Puja is “Mrichhakatika” (The Clay Cart). This theme promises to be a visual and cultural treat for all attendees. The Khunti Puja saw the presence of distinguished guests including Shri Sujit Bose, MLA and Minister of Department of Fire and Emergency Services of West Bengal Government, and Smt. Krishna Chakraborty, Mayor of Bidhannagar. The ceremony was inaugurated by renowned actresses Aparajita Adhya and Manasi Sinha.

A Celebration of Community

Shri Lakshmi Kanta Kar, President of the New Town Sarbojanin Puja Committee, expressed his excitement about the upcoming festivities. “We at the New Town Sarbojanin Puja Committee are thrilled to announce the upcoming Khunti Puja celebrations. This is a special occasion for our community, and we are committed to making it a memorable experience for all.”

Cultural Performances and Decorations

The Khunti Puja brought the community together with colorful decorations, cultural performances, and a shared commitment to fostering harmony. Concept artist Anirban Das has curated the theme, ensuring an enriched cultural experience for all. Retired IPS officer Mr. Banibrata Basu serves as the chief advisor, adding a layer of wisdom and experience to the proceedings.

The tradition of Khunti Puja, or pole worship, is an age-old practice that marks the beginning of pandal making for Durga Puja festivities. This ritual initiates the months-long process with all auspiciousness, setting the tone for the grand celebrations to follow.
