Kolkata, December 9, 2022: The students of Acharya Tulsi Academy Orchids The International School, Newtown, launched the ‘Healthy Soil for a Healthy Life’ initiative today. The student council members conducted a plantation drive within the school campus which will be a continuous activity where students will regularly plant, nurture and ensure favorable conditions and environment for them to grow. A documentary on soil conservation, how to conserve soil, and its importance in maintaining the ecological balance was screened for the students. The students also enthusiastically created placards with impactful messages and drawings to create awareness of soil conservation.
The objective of the event was to spread awareness of the importance of maintaining healthy ecosystems by addressing the growing challenges in soil management, increasing soil awareness, and encouraging societies to improve soil health.
Ms. Sharmili Shah, Principal at Acharya Tulsi Academy, Orchids The International School, Newtown, said, “Soil nutrient loss is a major soil degradation process threatening nutrition and is recognized among the most important problems at a global level for food security and sustainability. Activities like these help kids stay closer to nature, develop a sense of responsibility towards our environment, understand the importance of conservation, and encourage them to initiate small steps towards a sustainable future individually”.
“On the occasion of World Soil Day, we brought saplings to the school, which we planted at the school campus. We found a nice spot with good sunlight in the school, made the soil fertile enough, added water to the soil, and started planting trees. We had a lot of fun, and I had a great experience.” said Shivangi Bhattacharya, a student in grade 5.
