EASTERN RAILWAY’S STEP AHEAD TOWRADS MODERNIZATION IN HOWRAH DIVISION’S RAILWAY INFRASTRUCTURE

• Auto-signal commissioned between Cheragram & Masagram

Kolkata, December 3, 2023:

As a step forward towards capacity augmentation and increasing sectional capacity to run more trains seamlessly, Eastern Railway’s Howrah Division achieved a significant milestone with the commissioning of automatic signaling over the Chehragram – Masagram section spanning over 19 km. This accomplishment marks the successful transition from Absolute Block Signaling to Automatic Block Signaling across three block sections.

Key highlights of the project include the introduction of three lines – UP, DOWN, and a bi-directional REVERSIBLE LINE, equipped with eight Auto Huts constructed. A total of 60 new Automatic Signals have been commissioned, enhancing sectional operational efficiency, capacity, mobility and safety.

The Signal and Telecommunication department played a crucial role in the project, deploying 35 pairs of UFSBIs (Universal Fail Safe Block Interface) across 12 Relay Rooms, covering Auto Huts and Stations. MSDAC (Multi Section Digital Axle Counter) with varying capacities (20, 40, and 48) and 6 Nos. of Direction Panel has been implemented in the three block sections as a state-of-the-art replacement of detection system of presence or absence of trains between two stop signals.

Innovative features such as a cooperative-type Direction Panel for bi-directional line traffic selection have been incorporated. Additionally, two Level Crossing gates have been upgraded from Mechanical to Electrical lifting barriers, improving overall safety measures.

The project also includes installation of nine new IPSs (Integrated Power Supply Systems) – eight for Auto Huts and one for a Station. Three existing IPSs have also been augmented to meet the demands of the modernized infrastructure.

All necessary site-verified drawings have been handed over to the open line, marking the successful completion of this modernization initiative. With the incorporation of Automatic Block Signaling and other advanced technologies, this upgrade brings the equivalent of a double line and a reversible line, equivalent to a track kilometer (TKM) length of 3×19 = 57 TKM length of auto signal commissioning.

Shri Kausik Mitra, CPRO said “The Eastern Railway expresses its commitment to providing a safer and more efficient rail network for passengers and freight, reaffirming its dedication to ongoing advancements in railway infrastructure.”
