· Narayana Health RN Tagore Hospital’s Neurosurgery Team led by Dr. Amitabha Chanda, perform a Complex Brain Surgery through advanced neuro-navigation technique

Kolkata – Narayana Health RN Tagore Hospital , renowned for its commitment to delivering exceptional patient care, has once again demonstrated its medical expertise by successfully saving the life of a 80-year-old patient who was battling a life-threatening neurological complication. This remarkable achievement was made possible by the surgical precision of Dr. Amitabha Chanda, Senior Consultant – Neurosurgery (Brain and Spine Surgeon) at Narayana Health RN Tagore Hospital and his dedicated team. The team successfully performed a complex brain surgery using advanced neuro-navigation technique to give a new lease of life to the patient.

Mr. Mohan Dasgupta (Name Changed), an octogenarian from Howrah, initially attributed his difficulties in walking to old age. However, as his condition deteriorated, he lost the ability to walk and experienced complete paralysis in his right upper and lower limbs. In May 2023, he was brought to Narayana Health RN Tagore Hospital, where he sought the expertise of Dr. Amitabha Chanda, a neurosurgical maestro. A Brain MRI was conducted which revealed a daunting challenge – a massive brain tumor on the left side, necessitating immediate surgery. After extensive thinking, the family put their trust in Dr. Chanda’s experience and credentials & decided to go ahead with the surgery.

“The patient was no ordinary case. With a cardiac ailment and a low ejection fraction of 35%, he was already on blood thinners, adding complexity to the surgery. Furthermore, he suffered from obstructive lung disease compounded by his advanced age. Surgery was the only option, and the family was meticulously informed about the risks and benefits,” said Dr. Amitabha Chanda.

“The operation’s intricacy was evident, with the tumor infiltrating a large venous lake at the top of the head. Attempting to remove the tumor from the venous lake posed the risk of catastrophic bleeding, potentially fatal on the operating table. The patient would require postoperative ventilation, which initially caused apprehension in the family,” added Dr. Amitabha Chanda.

Despite initial reservations, Mr. Dasgupta’s determination prevailed, and he proceeded with the operation. At the time of admission, he had lost all movement on his right side including his ability to speak.

Dr. Amitabha Chanda, with the support of Dr. Apratim Mukherjee, Senior Consultant in Anesthesia at Narayana Health RN Tagore Hospital, embarked on the challenging surgery. Employing neuro-navigation for precision, Dr. Chanda navigated the operation with dexterity, delicately separating the tumor from the severely compressed brain. In the end, the tumor was extracted from the large venous lake, and catastrophic bleeding was averted. The operation concluded successfully.

According to the experts, as planned, the patient was placed on ventilation. A subsequent CT scan confirmed the complete removal of the tumor. When he woke up, Mr. Dasgupta could speak, marking a remarkable improvement. His limb power gradually returned, and by the time of discharge, he could walk with support, move his right upper limb effectively, and communicate.

“The lesson learned from this patient is that brain surgery can be done safely with excellent results at any age. People get terrified of brain surgery, and there’s a misconception about ventilators. Most patients recover from it. A ventilator is a life-saving device. Any brain surgery is safe when performed by a skilled and experienced neurosurgeon in a good setup,” emphasized Dr. Amitabha Chanda.

Mr. R Venkatesh, Group Chief Operating Officer – Narayana Health, expressed his appreciation for the team’s exceptional efforts, giving hope to a family on the verge of despair. He emphasized, “The success of this case will inspire patients facing life-threatening conditions to seek the best treatment and care.”

Mr. Abhijit CP, Facility Director at Narayana Health RN Tagore Hospital, highlighted the institution’s ongoing commitment to providing top-notch treatment through its highly experienced team of doctors. He stated, “With the successful resolution of this extremely challenging case, we are ushering in a new era of neurosurgery, revolutionizing patient care and surgical outcomes.”

Narayana Health RN Tagore Hospital continues to exemplify excellence in healthcare by achieving groundbreaking milestones and delivering hope to patients and their families when they need it most.
