KAMARKUNDU RAILWAY STATION TAKES THE GREEN LEAD: CONSTRUCTING SOLAR POWER SYSTEM FOR A SUSTAINABLE TOMORROW

Kolkata, November 25, 2023:

In a steadfast commitment to sustainable practices and environmental stewardship, Eastern Railway’s Howrah Division, is currently in the process of constructing a solar power system at Kamarkundu Railway station that will cover over 50% of its platform rooftop area. This is a step further towards fulfilling commitment of Eastern Railway for transforming Railway network into an environmentally sustainable mass transportation system.

Key Highlights of the Solar Installation: Kamarkundu Railway Station
1.Plant Capacity: 50 kW
2.Number of PV Modules: 150
3.Annual Electricity Generation: 63,000 units
4.Annual Savings: ₹6.3 lakhs
5.Carbon Emissions Reduction: 40 tons per year
6.Equivalent to Planting: 2000 Trees

Shri Sanjeev Kumar, Divisional Railway Manager, stated, “We are all making a concerted effort to turn Indian Railways into an environmentally sustainable mass transportation system with the maximum possible use of alternative forms of clean and renewable energy. This will help in reducing the carbon footprint, which is a mission area for the Railways.”

The ongoing construction of the solar power system at Kamarkundu Railway Station is a vital step towards achieving this mission. The plant, with a capacity of 50 kW and comprised of 150 photovoltaic modules, is anticipated to generate approximately 63,000 units of electricity annually. This initiative is not only environmentally conscious but also financially prudent, leading to an annual savings of approximately ₹6.3 lakhs.

Moreover, the solar power system is expected to contribute significantly to reducing carbon emissions, with a net reduction of 40 tons per year. This reduction is equivalent to planting 2000 trees, underscoring the railway’s commitment to offsetting carbon emissions and promoting a greener and healthier environment.

As the construction progresses, Kamarkundu Railway Station is poised to become a shining example of sustainable infrastructure within the Indian Railways network. The railway station encourages other divisions and organizations to follow suit, collectively contributing to a cleaner and more sustainable future.
